Real-to-Virtual Transaction: Making a Fortune in Online Games
Making a living from online gaming is the fantasy of thousands of gamers across the wold, but in this internet age it is fantasy no longer. From the lowly Chinese workshop to high-tech offices of internet entrepreneurs, virtual money has become a hot commodity. The industry spans from New York to Shanghai, with hundreds of thousands of avid customers inbetween. Millions of players across the globe provide custom for RMT websites that are becoming some of the most search for site on the search engines.
Real-Money Trading has seldom had the attention of worldwide media and even when it has, it's gone little beyond the trivial details. Regardless of this, RMT remains most active in games such as World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XI, EverQuest and EVE, to name a few. An example is in EVE where gamers progress through numerous dungeons, quests and scenarios in order to fill their pockets with the game's currency. Many gamers decide to spend their hard-earned currency on themselves, but some decide to approach the task like a business, utilizing any means necessary to bolster their reserves of currency and sell it on for real cash.
Developers of MMORPGs tend to disagree with the practices detailed above, and they cite several reasons for doing so. Intellectual property infringement is the most commonly given reason for objection by gaming companies, but there are also accusations of hacking, scamming and phishing within the industry. The problem of hacking, phishing and fraud do exist within the industry, but it is restricted to a minority of rogue companies. This is an extremely grey issue and whilst some legal actions are launched by game developers, the only country to take legislative action on the matter is Japan.
On the other hand, some gaming companies are now beginning to integrate the practice of real-money trading into their business models and examples can now be seen in many minor games. There is certainly money to be made, whether it's by developers or entrepreneurs, and the market shows no sign of slowing. A bright future lies ahead with new opportunities available in yet unreleased titles, the most promising of which being Warhammer Online.
